Social Media Editor As a customary part of graduation, seniors at Red Lion Area Senior High School are required to take part in a mock job interview every fall. Students planning on graduating in the spring are expected to create an imitation cover letter and resume, preparing themselves for a pseudo interview. Similar to real life interviews, these mock interviews can bring about numerous bouts of stress and anxiety. Students go into the interviews with shaky legs, sweaty palms and racing minds, however they come out with big smiles and broader horizons.

By Shawn Gunarich News and Features Editor Meredith Kunce, senior cheerleader and track athlete, was crowned homecoming queen during the pep assembly in the Fitzkee Center Oct. 13. Meredith was chosen from a court that also included, Gillian Orwig, Olivia Riggs, Lindsay Wilhelm, Paige Shingler, Kelsi Hess, Jayda Francisco. The pep assembly kicked off the Class Cup competition, with class-divided games, including tug-o-war and musical chairs. The sophomore class landed on top with a total of 40 class point after the winning of musical chairs and the victory chant. Not far behind, the juniors hold 35 points after taking a win in the limbo contest, which garnered them 20 points and 15 points for students wearing class color. The freshman tug-o-war squad dominated the rope, pulling in the win against the junior and senior class for 20 points. And rounding out the bottom, the senior class holds zero points after coming up short in every event losing to the freshman at tug-o-war and not able to handle the juniors flexible limbo skill. Social Media Editor Following tradition, high school homecomings draw a fairly large crowd. People enjoy things like picking out dresses or suits, going out to eat, and dancing with a date or with friends. So when the possibility of having a second homecoming in the winter popped up, many people responded positively. In an informal survey conducted by The Leonid during lunch, 84 percent of people said they would go; 16 percent said they would not. Despite the predominantly positive feedback, Red Lion High School will not have a winter homecoming, or a “SnoCo”, as it would have been called. By Helen Zeidman
Editor in Chief Student Council is firing up their time machine for a one night only. Drive-in diners, poodle skirts, and Elvis’s classic rock and roll are making a comeback at this year’s homecoming dance on October 15. This year’s theme is “The Sock Hop,” which embodies the energy and fun of the decade. Student Council is hoping to “rock your socks off and swing it back to the 1950s.” With a new DJ from Klock Entertainment and decorations to match the hopping 50’s, this year’s homecoming is definitely going to be a kick. By Zachary Rhine News and Feature Editor The end of one’s senior year of high school is a coveted moment in any student’s life. It marks the completion of a thirteen year journey of schooling, and recognizes all of their efforts over those years. Some students choose to make this occasion even more memorable by delivering a graduation speech at the ceremony. Graduation speeches are student delivered monologues that are directed at that year’s graduating class and are meant to be inspirational. At Red Lion Area High School, students audition after school in front of a small group of faculty members including principal Mr. Mark Shue and English teacher Dr. Cari Ayala, who is the main orchestrator of the events. This year there were 15 students that auditioned; a much bigger turnout than previous years, noted Ayala. Students are chosen not solely based on the quality of their speeches, but also their posture, articulation, and overall presentation skills. By Ben Wesley Staff Writer For clarification, there is a difference between orchestra and band. The string orchestra consists of four instruments: the violin, viola, cello, and bass; while the band uses other instruments. However, for the holiday concert, the string orchestra and band team up to form a full orchestra, which has more than just strings. Mrs. Ashley McDaniel, the orchestra teacher in the Red Lion school district, only joined Red Lion this year. After working at a private school in Maryland, she now leads the senior high and junior high orchestras, as well as teaching eighth grade music classes. The purpose of the orchestra, McDaniel said, is “to enrich the students’ musical experiences, to have fun, and to express ourselves.” After all, she pointed out, music is how we relieve stress, celebrate, and simply experience life. |
