Wyatt Franks plans to attend Penn State in the fall. Wyatt Franks overcomes adversity in an effort to succeed. By Marquice Phillips Senior Editor Wyatt Franks, voted most involved and most likely to succeed in the senior class superlative, is working hard to make sure both those statements stay true. At the end of last year Franks had been voted into the office of Student Council President. President Franks oversees all the functions of Student Council, as well as all of the community service they plan to do. Franks, in addition to his student council duties, is also involved as the blood d drive coordinator. As coordinator, Franks plans, organizes, and hosts the Blood Drive. Along with his committee he meets with the Red Cross, as well as organizes sign-ups and tries to get as many donors as possible. Alongside his numerous in-school activities, he also has a number of jobs he has. During the summer he began as an intern at Heritage Hills, which lasted till October; afterwards he started manning the front desk, which is the position he currently holds. “I wanted to do it because it’s what I want to do with my life,” Franks said. As a child, Franks was very involved with Boy Scouts of America, beginning when he was just 9 years old. Franks remained active with Boy Scouts; however when he came out he had to drop scouting completely, as being gay isn’t allowed unless Okayed by the Scoutmaster. However, in December of 2011, Franks rejoined scouts with the permission of his Scoutmaster. Franks described his ordeal as a journey, allowing him to become a better person, and gain a different perspective on life. However, it’s not only his perspective that’s changed. “I missed scouting and lost track of all my core values. However, I am back on track now.” With all these activities and jobs under his belt, he not only shows that any student can benefit from becoming more involved with their school, but also that no matter who you are or where you come from it shouldn’t define you and keep you from your dreams. When asked what keeps him motivated Franks said, “Seeing the difference we make helps keep me going.” After high school, Franks plans to attend Penn State University to major in hotel, restaurant, and institutional management.
