By Ian Adler Staff Writer “Yesterday was awful,” said Mrs. Carrie Smeltzer after receiving chemotherapy treatment. A health teacher at Red Lion Area Senior High School and a continuing fighter of cancer, Mrs Smeltzer graduated from Red Lion in 2000 and has been teaching at the same school since 2005. Mrs. Smeltzer was first diagnosed with breast cancer on December 20, 2011. “I was angry, I had a baby six months before and was supposed to be happy but at 30 years old, here I was.” Family and friends were speechless and heartbroken, however her husband had remained strong, supportive and “awesome.” She was declared “cancer-free” on May 30, 2012. Yet, there was still a problem. Cancerous cells remained in her body. “The pain in my arm I got while teaching turned out to be cancer that had spread, which is a scary thought.” Round two of her fight began on June 17, 2013. “I was angry but I knew I had to pick myself up and live with it,” she said. Family and friends were still shocked. Smeltzer says she “does not want the cancer to hold her back” and she looks forward to teaching in the upcoming school year and sharing her story of bravery and victory. Red Lion 2011 graduate Andrew Zeller and K-12 technology coach Mrs. Smith have been working hard to help out the Smeltzer family any way they can, and the money used toward the t-shirts goes to the family of four. “I came up with the idea of the shirt the day that I found out her cancer was back,” said Zeller. “Little did she know I was serious and that I would eventually try selling them to everyone that she has been able to grace her presence with.” It appears that Mrs. Smeltzer is not alone in this fight and she has a whole team to back her up for “round two”.

By Shalah Ponder Staff Writer Besides the new schedule changes, the buzz around Red Lion has been focused on two new teachers: Mr. D’orazio, the new assistant principal, and Mrs. Cozzens, the new English teacher. They both sat down with the Leonid for informative interviews. Many students at Red Lion High School are wondering who exactly the new assistant principal is or who the new english teacher is in D219. Mr. Scott D’orazio and Mrs. Cozzens decided to sit down with the Leonid for a very informative interview.

“Temple was the perfect fit for me. It’s in the sixth largest media market in the United States,” he says. “There’s a lot of sports teams that can be covered and there’s always news coverage. It’s great because Temple is just in the middle of it all so you can get involved with many different opportunities.”
After being encouraged along with other classmates from the School of Media & Communication, the Red Lion Class of 2011 graduate was one of many students to submit their work to the NATAS Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards Committee in late May in hopes to receive an Emmy nomination. A few months later Otte received a message from a Temple studio worker that his submission had been nominated by the committee in the Collegiate Sports Production category. The video work Otte submitted highlighted former men’s basketball guard TJ DiLeo as a student athlete. Working together with reporter Tanya Hubbard, the submission also gave a behind-the-scenes perspective of the atmosphere of last year’s Temple Men’s Basketball team’s trip to the NCAA Tournament in Dayton, OH. Now with the nomination at-hand, the 2013 NATAS Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards Committee will host a dinner on September 7 to announce the winners within the various categories. “Although it is a huge honor to be nominated for this award, I unfortunately can’t make it to dinner because I’m previously committed to film a wedding on that same day,” explains Otte. “It is an accomplishment by itself to be nominated for this award. Either way, I’m very excited to see what the future holds.” Many say it’s Otte’s passion and dedication that got him to where he is today. “This would’ve never happened without Mr. Deprator and doing all the TV and video work I did in high school,” he says. “That’s how it all started.” |
