By Helen Zeidman Editor in Chief Student Council is firing up their time machine for a one night only. Drive-in diners, poodle skirts, and Elvis’s classic rock and roll are making a comeback at this year’s homecoming dance on October 15. This year’s theme is “The Sock Hop,” which embodies the energy and fun of the decade. Student Council is hoping to “rock your socks off and swing it back to the 1950s.” With a new DJ from Klock Entertainment and decorations to match the hopping 50’s, this year’s homecoming is definitely going to be a kick. The 1950’s were a time of decadent swing dresses, greased back hair, and the infamous motorcycle jacket. James Dean and Marilyn Monroe set a lot of the trends for the time period.
“I am excited to see if people dress to match the theme,” Mrs. Dennish said. “We even toyed around with playing some 50’s music.” Since homecoming festivities are not until the middle of October, Student Council has more time to put a few twists on homecoming traditions. For the first time, Student Council is planning to collaborate with the Parent Teacher Organizations of the elementary schools and junior high in order to organize a homecoming carnival. The goal of the debut carnival is to invite the community to participate in the homecoming festivities. Mrs. Dennish and the Student Council hope that their new carnival, in conjunction with the traditional homecoming parade and bonfire, will help the community rally school spirit. In order to continue bringing the community and school together, Student Council needs to raise money through the homecoming festivities. “The money we make for homecoming funds activities for the rest of the year,” Mrs. Dennish said. “Wish week, the Best Day Ever, and the candy we handed out at the beginning of school are all funded by homecoming.” With tickets only being $20 for singles and $30 for doubles, Mrs. Dennish hopes that everyone will be able to make the scene and enjoy the dance. “They should come because it is going to be a really good time,” she said. “It’s fun to get dressed up and hang out with your friends. Plus it is dark enough that no one can see if you can’t dance.”
