By Paul Jones Sports Editor As high school sports teams transition from season to season, replacing seniors is always difficult. However, the Red Lion lacrosse team in a unique situation as they have to replace a total of 139 goals from last year’s seniors. “Overall last season was great I thought. We scored a ton of goals and our defense was a pretty solid group as well,” said Senior Sam Emig. “And with multiple threats, it was hard for the other teams to stop us.” Red Lion had the best duo in York County last year with Emig and Red Lion graduate, Jac Gemmill, scoring 143 goals between them. Both were named to the Gametimepa all-star team and were the catalyst for the high-powered offense. The defense was anchored last year by Alex Keough who was also an all-star, but he was a senior last year as well.
The team lost other key seniors in Justin Dashler who scored 44 goals last season and Nick Shima who chipped in with 16. The task of regrouping will not be on Emig solely. Mason Gauntt proved himself as one of the league’s best faceoff men, winning 70 percent of his 321 faceoff attempts. “We excelled in faceoffs last year thanks to Mason,” Emig said. “He’s gonna be back better and stronger so that’s definitely going to help tremendously this season.” This will be a young Red Lion team, as underclassmen like Elijah Workinger, Trevor Rider, and Nick Serrano will have toperform and produce. While very young, Red Lion’s more youthful players have expereince. Sophomore Elijah Workinger burst onto the scene last year by coming up big in many games. Sam Emig was a captain last year as a junior and will continue his leadership. “I’m just going to be 110% committed to the team,” Emig said. “I’m gonna do anything I can to help the team win games and go as far as possible.” Emig is also coming up on history, as he recently scored his 200th goal in his career. With talent like that, Red Lion lacrosse players will look up to Emig for years to come, just like how the young players on the team will have to do now.
