Sports Editor The Lions started the season off right with a 35-12 win over J.P. McCaskey in the first regular season game of the year on Friday night. Quarterback Zach Mentzer completed nine of his 15 passes for a total of 147 yards. Mentzer completed a three-yard swing pass to Elijah Workinger and a 22-yard throw to Randy Fizer for two touchdowns on the night. With the Lions up 21-0 late in the first half it seemed liked J.P. McCaskey had finally arrived in the game with a good 53-yard drive down the field. However with under two minutes before half Jason Nazarenus intercepted a pass from the McCaskey quarterback and ran 94 yards the other way for a pick-six and the 28-0 lead. Senior running back Tyler Ness ran 12 times for a total of 89 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Ness also caught two passes for 57 receiving yards.

Staff Writer Alec Shue, a senior at Red Lion Area Senior High School, is excited for the upcoming tennis season. Working up to this year, Shue has played tennis all of his life, and is very passionate about the sport. Shue says that the goal for the season is for the team to move onto districts, and as a personal goal, to get second in counties. When asked what his role as a leader consisted of, he described that he likes to lead by example. “I would say i'm more of a silent leader,” Shue said. “I believe that it's the best way to show the younger kids on the team how to handle themselves, and how to play a solid match of tennis.” By Derek Etter
Social Media & Marketing Editor In a new way to integrate sports, the Red Lion Special Education department has begun UNIFIED track and field in affiliation with the Special Olympics. The program, which created the Team "Unified Lions,” is integrating special needs students into the track team under the mantra, "We are one." With the goal of eliminating labels, the special needs students (called "athletes") have begun to practice with peer "partners" from the JV and Varsity teams. |
