Alumnus Andrew Zeller rises to the challenge of pro football.Larissa Joines Staff Writer Red Lion graduate Andrew Zeller has recently excelled to the next level of his athletic career. In early May, Zeller posted on his Facebook page that he would become a Detroit Lion, signing a free agent deal the weekend of the NFL draft. An offensive lineman for the University of Maryland, Zeller is 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds. Zeller went undrafted in the 2016 NFL draft but was happy to receive the call that he was waiting for: the call from his agent telling him he has been picked up by an NFL team. “I anticipate a once in a lifetime opportunity that will require a strenuous challenge both mentally and physically,” said Zeller “but it is a challenge that I have dreamed of and one that I am willing to embrace.” Coming this far was not just a walk in the park as any athlete or fan would know.

Staff Writer Last year there was the dunk heard around the world when Mr. Dennish dunked on Bradley Irizarry. This year’s Students vs. Teachers basketball game is Friday, May 13 in the Fitzkee center. Sign ups for students were the last week of April and first week of May. So far for the seniors that have signed up are Ian Adler, Ian Schaeffer, Judge Kunce, Jason Rebuck, Brian Treible, and Kendrick Boyd Gillespie. Word around the court is that senior Boyd-Gillespie said he is going to, “Dunk on Mr. Dennish since he dissed my man Brad last year, cross up Bull because he can’t play defense, and I am going to put Schmehl on skates.” The teachers that signed up are Mr. Dennish, Mr. Bull, Mr. Schmehl, Mr. Bell, Mr. McCleary, Mr. Neff, Mr. Shaeffer, Mr. Fritzuis, Mr. Masser, Mrs. Gillis, Mrs. Knaper, and Mrs. Grove. This game is only for seniors who are part of the varsity club. The seniors won last year and want to keep that streak going. By Jason Rebuck
Staff Writer The 2016 Track & Field season is underway. The team is ready to compete. The goal of the season is simple; each competitor will work hard all season to improve his or her individual performance and help the team. With the boys record of 5-1 last season, Coach Barshinger is looking for progress from last year since the loss of several key seniors last year leaves the current team very young By Paul Jones Sports Coordinator Some say that it takes a special kind of person to play goalie in lacrosse. It is not necessarily normal to willingly let others hurl lacrosse balls. Going into this season, the boys lacrosse team had some uncertainty about who was going to play goalie. Assistant Coach Nathan Barrett felt that uncertainty early on, but later it was a clear choice. “Matt Hale stepped up. Cameron Aughie is a freshman. We have a sophomore (Nick Serrano) but he’s out for the whole season with an injury,” Coach Barrett said. “Matt has just really showed up this year.’’ By Paul Jones
Sports Editor Senior middle blocker, Brian Trieble, stands out from the crowd both metaphorically and literally. Standing at 6’6”, he towers above most both on and off the court, but that is only part of who he is. Some might remember him from his electric pregame handshake during the basketball season. He performed some Jedi moves before he played against Central on his senior night. Being a multi-sport athlete is tough. Playing both basketball and volleyball is not something that many athletes do. So where does his love for athletics come from? By Austin Kelly Staff Writer Red Lion boys volleyball has a new coach this season. Coach Rick Torbert has taken over as head coach of the Red Lion High School boys varsity volleyball team. “I’m very excited to take over as head coach of the team,” Mr. Torbert said. Previously, Mr. Torbert had coached ten years of girls club volleyball at Yorktowne Volleyball Club. He was a volunteer at Red Lion for girls volleyball for four years. He even has a sand volleyball court in his front yard and hosts tournaments, clinics, leagues, and training in the summer. |
