By Rachel Lau Senior Editor This year Rio held the 2016 Summer Olympics and several new athletes were introduced to the Games. Having 19 Olympic and world medals combined, Simone Biles is the most decorated American gymnast. Growing up, Biles spent most of her time practicing gymnastics in hopes she would be able to participate in the Olympics one day. After so much hard work and practice she tried to get into the 2012 London Olympic Games but couldn’t because she was too young to qualify. Although she wasn’t able to participate in those games, it was said that she completely dominated gymnastics after her senior debut in 2013. She’s the first female gymnast since 1974 to have won four consecutive all-around titles at the U.S. national championships and the first woman ever to be the all-around champion for the past three years. She also has won 14 world champion medals, making her the only American woman to have ever won that many. Twenty year old Kyle Snyder, became the youngest Olympic wrestling champion in United States history after competing in his first Olympics. He received the first and only gold medal for the U.S. in men’s wrestling at the Rio Games.
Even before he got his Junior World title in 2013, Snyder decided he wanted to pursue wrestling at a higher league and participate in the next Olympic games and began to train for them. In the spring of 2014, he was selected to join Team USA. After winning both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Championship as a freshman, Lilly King took home two gold medals from Rio. She started swimming when she was just seven years old and continued to do so while attending Indiana University. She finished in sixth place at the US Nationals and then joined the Junior Pan Pacific Championship and took home gold from the events she participated in. Later, she was apart of the World University Games and picked up a silver and bronze from there. Due to her strength in the 100m breaststroke in the Olympic trials, it was said she would be a true contender for a gold medal in the event, which she was.
