By Paul Jones Sports Coordinator In past Fourth Grade Environmental Days, one would be able to find high school and elementary school students working together at a Felton area farm, learning about the world around them. One group would be sitting in an area learning about reptiles, while another group would be staring at a teacher in wonderment as she presents some amazing creature. This year, the event, put on by senior high students with the help of teachers, was held inside due to weather. But in no way did that get in the way of the students who were determined to educate our much smaller friends. “We’re just here to give them the proper education on animals and the environment,” senior Dominick Eyler said.
Eyler is one of the many students who ran all of the stations where fourth graders can come and learn about their world. The fourth graders could go to a station to learn about insects and arachnids by going on a garden bug hunt. Or they could go to the stream station and learn about pollution of the watershed. In all, there were five stations, all constructed and run by senior high students. Science teacher Heather Fogell is the head advisor and has been for a number of years now. And even as she is in charge of putting together the entire process, she couldn’t stress enough how much the senior high kids are responsible for and how great a job they did. “This year especially, these students have taken what we gave them and just run with it,” Ms. Fogell said. “They have been giving some amazing Fourth Grade Day’s presentations.” The event also showcased a wide variety of animals, all from a forty pound tortoise to the incredibly small isopods. “All these animals are from the students and I can’t stress that enough,” Ms. Fogell said. “It’s just amazing how much Red Lion kids have to offer.” Most of the animals came from a local pet store where some Red Lion students work. Fourth Grade Days has a great reputation and it shows as the store felt comfortable enough to let the program exhibit the animals.
