By Carly Guise Editor-in-Chief For some, an ACL injury and no sports for a year may have the end of all things. For Phil Douglass, though, it was only the closing of one window that led to the opening of another. Today, Phil is an intern at Studio 117 - a music studio in the heart of York City - but at the beginning of his high school career, the sports he played were everything. “I had no intention of doing music at all until I got hurt playing football. Sports was the only thing I wanted to do,” the Red Lion junior said. “Just sports. But I got hurt and I couldn’t do anything, so I went to music.” That decision ultimately led him to Studio 117, where he first arrived with the hope to become a recording artist this past February.
“The first time I went was because of my music, and I was looking for a studio where I could make my sound better and more professional,” Phil said. “But then summer came around and I was looking for a job, and I thought that it would be cool if I could just sit there and watch, and be around everything that was going on there in the music studio.” When he called the studio at first, they told him that they didn’t have an internship program set up. Summertime came and went, and Phil released a few songs on the music sharing site SoundCloud, and by the end of the summer, the studio called him back. “They said that they did have an internship finally set up. They asked me to fill out an application. I did and included the songs that I had made myself over the summer,” Phil said. “They called me back the next day to set up an interview.” Through the internship, Phil has the ability to observe and learn as much as possible about the field that he wants to go into as an adult. “I do the small stuff, the cleaning and straightening up, making sure that everything is neat,” he said, “but I also sit back and try to learn as much as I can. I try to take it all in, as much as possible.” Studio 117 is a multi-genre recording studio. Through his internship there, Phil has seen singers and musicians of all different genres record and display their talents. He says that this exposure has allowed him to find what he wants to use with his own music, regardless of what genre it comes from. “I love artistry,” he said. “And being able to express myself through music.”
