By Sarah Marcules Staff Writer This season of homecoming, many people were wondering what to wear to the occasion. One-shoulder dresses are one of the many things that are “in” this year, along with floral prints and accents. Also, animal prints are big right now. Jewelry can still be subtle, but there are a lot of bold colors and funky shapes to spice up your attire. Although many styles are usually formal, a more casual approach seems to be popular this year as well. The high- low dresses with the short in the front, long in the back skirt have become a big hit for homecoming fashion for the 2013 - 2014 dance. Sophmore Emma Rinehart was sporting this style this year; a strapless black and crimson high-low dress. “I’m not big on dressing up,” Rinehart said, “so I like how casual these dresses look.” Others like Senior Leah Shermeyer, who sported a glittery turquoise dress, saved their cash and wore just appealing trends, but for much less. “Dresses are so expensive nowadays, and it’s such a hassle to go out and get one,” Le Shermeyer said. A cheap dress can be just as great as a newly bought one, so thrifting may be a great idea! Some people like Sophmore Brittany Zeigler, who wore a flowy long turquoise dress with a jeweled top, got their dresses online. “I wanted to get my dress ahead of time to save the hassle of having to go out and get it last minute,” Zeigler said. Long dresses were preferred over shorter dresses this season, and Senior Kaylee Waga was a prime example. When asked about what she was wearing to homecoming, she informed the Leonid, ”I wore a long coral dress with the jeweled look.” One can get their dresses just about anywhere, but the Deb shop at the mall seems to be a hot spot for a lot of people. Along with that, places like JC Penny, Boscovs, and Sears are great places to go to as well. We break down the hottest songs of this year’s “Night in Paris” Homecoming dance which was held October 19. By Phoenix Ashman Staff Writer Homecoming has come and gone, along with the opportunity to ask someone to go in a fun, creative way. Red Lion students have really shown their creativity when it comes to asking someone to be their date to homecoming this year. Senior Hannah Brady’s invitation, given by senior Evan Miller, was a more expected. “He put balloons on my stairwell and they all said, ‘Will you go to homecoming?’ on them. My bedroom was filled with pink and purple balloons. Evan was standing in the middle of the room with flowers, and then he asked me. I said yes!” Seniors Mason Zeplo and Maddie Arnold-Scerbo became each other’s dates by fishbowl. Zeplo placed his question inside a fishbowl at Pets and You in the Red Lion square. “I asked her this way because we both work at the same pet store for about three years, and I thought it would be a fun way to ask her to homecoming. She loved it,” Zeplo said. Junior, Emily Hylind, was asked in a much more public way by senior Dom Francisco. “I was at cheerleading practice and he drove his car down,” Hylind said. “My coach knew about it so we were sitting in a circle. Graeme Nelson got out with a ukulele and started singing ‘Just The Way You Are’ by Bruno Mars. Then Dom started singing with him then they stopped and Dom said, ‘I can’t sing but I can dance. Will you go to homecoming with me?’ I said yes and he gave me flowers.” On October 7, senior Anna Haynie used boys’ soccer senior night to her advantage to ask her would-be-date senior Ryan Sprenkle to homecoming. She presented him a pizza in a to-go box. Inside the box, the lid read, “This might be cheesy but, homecoming?” “I asked him this way because I thought it would be funny and different, and I knew he would be hungry after the game!” Haynie said, “He said yes. He loved it!” Senior Jessica Ham asked her boyfriend Jared Mowery who attends the Mount Joy campus of Lancaster County Career & Technology Center. “I wanted to bring my boyfriend, who doesn’t attend Red Lion, to our homecoming. So after a football game, I wrote on his car to ask him and I filled his car with balloons, streamers, and his favorite candy,” Ham said. “I put box right above his steering wheel and put a tie that matched my dress inside. He said yes!” To be sure, the bar has been raised for creative, fun and romantic ways to ask a date to homecoming. The true romantics will be tested as more dances waltz their way around. |
