By Derek Etter Staff Writer Her room in the business education wing is no stranger to Red Lion students, anyone could recognize the neon letters above the doorway to her classroom, announcing her presence in the hall. And after 25 years of teaching at Red Lion, Mrs. Lori Krouse will be retiring at the end of this school year. She says she used to “play teacher” with peers as a child, but never imagined she would actually be one. A Shippensburg Graduate, Krouse studied undeclared until her business professor pulled her aside after class and told her that with her communication skills and personality, she should consider being a teacher. Krouse taught business at Red Lion sporadically through the late 80’s, because of her second job as a mother, the latter being her top priority.
She began full-time teaching again in 1998, so it is no surprise some of her former students include RL staff. One, Mrs. Howard says “She was high-energy.. and truly cared for her students.” In fact, Krouse herself says her favorite thing about teaching is her students. “I truly love every student.” She also says she keeps in touch with her students, curious to see what they’re up to upon graduating. Her personality shows that not only does she have a close relationship with her students, but she has made a lasting impression in their minds. As she sat on a desk reminiscing her past at Red Lion, it was clear she had made a comfortable home in her class for any student. Krouse describes herself as “outgoing, friendly, and strict… but others would say I’m loud.” Laughing to herself, she also said “I think my students would agree and say I was fun as well.” She says that the biggest part of teaching is taking care of students, who she treats like family in her classroom. “Sometimes even I learn from them, all of the younger slang especially,” she said, laughing at what she’s heard from Red Lion students over the years. Krouse said her biggest hope for the new teacher coming to take her spot is that “they enjoy teaching the business subjects and the students as much as I have after all of these years,” making it clear she cares very much about the topic and its applications in real life. Even after she’s gone, she wants students to know the most important thing about business education is to “learn computer skills.” Although business is at the height of her interests, she is excited to see what other opportunities she will be able to explore. One of these includes volunteer work, another is interior design. She says at home she drives her husband nuts constantly watching HGTV and changing her home’s interior, engaging her hidden interest. She is also retiring with two of her fellow teachers, Mrs. Strayer and Mrs. Moser. Although excited to finish teaching, she feels “nervous but complete” about her career coming full circle. She also has a beach home in Delaware she is looking forward to spending time in. “I’m retiring in approximately 58 days… but who’s counting?” She said, laughing. Krouse’s positive energy and big personality have surely made an impact on Red Lion. Her care and passion for teaching her students, whom she treats like family, is what gives her exactly what it takes to be the best teacher she could be. “I’m just glad that this year has been one of the most enjoyable, and I’m so glad because I wanted to exit on a high note.”
