Social Media Editor Picture this; you’re standing in the old gymnasium of the Red Lion High School. The room is decked out wall to wall like a winter wonderland, music from a DJ is pumping and students are dancing wildly in the middle of the floor. Fast forward to to the end of February and that is exactly what you will see. Contrary to popular belief, the next dance to look forward to this school year is not prom. Staff Writer In the past, there have been many dances: Prom, Homecoming, King of Hearts, all with one similarity: there has always been one king or queen. However, this year, in a surprising turn of events, and for the first time ever, two queens were crowned for Homecoming 2013. During the pep rally on Thursday October 17 seniors Morgan Kuehne and Kylie Strong were crowned Homecoming Queens for the 2013-2014 Homecoming dance, this being the first time in Red Lion history that two queens were crowned. “I was really shocked but also really excited,” says Kuehne, “I felt honored and very thankful to share the experience with [Strong].” The voting had taken place the same morning during Homeroom periods, and both girls recieved exactly 235 votes each. “It was a little surprising,” regarded Mrs. Dennish, “but we were prepared, I think we handled it well with the little time that we had. The ballots were also counted four separate times just for safety.” The Homecoming court, consisting of Alyssa Castle, Emma Conrad, Morgan Kuehne, Ali Posey, Kylie Strong, and Taylor Sprenkle have said they were all very thankful that they were able to share the moment with each other, regarding that they definitely won’t forget it. The dance itself was held on Saturday, October 20, in which Kuehne describes as, “the best Homecoming yet,” and even though the dance has come and gone, both Kuehne and Strong will go down in history as the first girls to be simultaneously named Homecoming Queen. By Ben Otte Staff Writer Friday's early dismissal didn't halt plans for the high school student council to announce this year's homecoming court. Student council president Ellie Lyons announced the nominees prior to dismissal on Friday through the school's P.A. system. This year's homecoming court will feature a close-knit group consisting of Alyssa Castle, Emma Conrad, Morgan Kuehne, Ali Posey, Ashtyn Smith, Taylor Sprenkle, and Kylie Strong. It was initially planned to have the nominees announced at Friday afternoon's pep rally. The rally however did not end up taking place due to the early dismissal. Seniors had the opportunity to vote for this year's homecoming court in the school Commons Area during lunch this past Thursday. Homecoming 2013, "A Night in Paris", is to be held next Saturday, October 19 at 7 p.m. |
