By Rachel Lau Senior Editor Only a few months remain until I graduate and leave high school behind. It seems like it’s a long, long time from now, but I know it isn’t at all. When I started my senior year, I was so excited to finish it. And now, here I am, wishing it would all slow down a little. I’ve been accepted into the college I want to go to and I picked out my dorm with my soon-to-be roommate. But I think what really made me realize I’m transitioning into an adult is the fact that I’m now making a list of what I need to get for my dorm room. When I saw the words microwave, detergent, and plunger, it hit me-- everything is changing. My parents won’t be there to make dinner, do my laundry, or clean, it will be my job to do all of those adult chores and more. It’s scary, yet so exciting. The freedom will be great, the independence too. It’s just getting used to not having my family around that will bother me a bit.
Not only am I going to miss my family, I’ll miss my friends too. I know I won’t see some of them ever again, or maybe I will, but not very often. Prom is our last dance to be with one another and have fun. As we’re swaying under the blue lights of “the sea,” it’ll be bitter-sweet. No more homecoming dances to dress up and spend time with the friends we’ve had for such a long time. And no more cool musicals to attend to or be a part of where we can be on stage or watch our peers. Breaks will be something that we cherish and really enjoy, because we know each one is shortening our time with our friends and teachers. Although many seniors say they are excited and they can’t wait to get away from Red Lion, I think they are all a little scared too. This has been our home for some time now. These have been our friends since elementary school or middle school, and our parents won’t be right down the hall anymore. We’re moving onto the next chapter of our lives and finally growing up-- well, some of us. It’s exciting, nerve racking, and life changing. But I’m as ready as I’ll ever be for it. This isn’t goodbye to everything, it’s farewell to our childhood, and hello to new beginnings.
