By Julia Adams Staff Writer In 2014, a single occurrence of measles turned into over 300 unvaccinated people catching the disease, the biggest outbreak of measles in 20 years. Many parents around the U.S. have been deciding not to vaccinate their children. It is believed that the reliability of the vaccines in comparison to their possible side effects isn’t proportional. It’s also believed that such diseases that vaccines protect against don’t exist anymore and that being vaccinated isn’t necessary. It is wrong to endanger the health of people because of small possibilities that the country can live without vaccines and that the side effects are too risky. Laws for vaccines are in place to protect the health of the country, and without them many people would end up dying from diseases they could have otherwise not had at all.
Part of the concern that comes with vaccinations is that it is possible that vaccinations can change the way a child grows up. Studies have shown that vaccines have links to cases of autism, learning disabilities, depression, ADHD, asthma and diabetes. The likelihood of these conditions isn’t nearly as much as the likelihood that the anti-vaccination movement will cause an increase in outbreaks in diseases. The reality is that 90-95% of people must have the measles vaccination to keep cases from arising. This is called herd immunity, and it is why being vaccinated is important. The health of a community of people is vital to controlling diseases. Kids not being vaccinated could become a huge problem for the health of the country. Vaccines have been proven to reduce the spread of diseases over multiple decades. Statistics show that vaccines prevent approximately 2.5 million deaths each year. Most diseases prevented by vaccines are no longer common in the United States. If vaccines weren’t used, just a few cases could quickly turn into tens or hundreds of thousands. It is crucial that children continue to be vaccinated. Parents refusing to get their children vaccinated is a problem that makes it hard to have a healthy environment. Vaccinations are the reason that half of the deadly diseases and illnesses that once existed no longer exist. The country must continue to utilize these precautions if there is to be such a thing as the ability to live a healthy life.
