Four years ago today, on November 16, 2013, I got a call that would change my life forever. A call with another voice on the line saying, “The lungs are here.”

When I was born, the doctors noticed something strange about my behavior. I was coughing up a sticky, green substance and not eating. Two weeks later, I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease which causes a sticky tar-like mucus buildup in the lungs and a decrease in pancreatic enzymes. Many different organs and aspects are impacted as well like the lungs, pancreas, sinuses, kidneys, liver, and stomach. For me, it was all of the above but in sections.

Nine hundred eighty-nine million dollars. That is the amount of money the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) made in the fiscal year 2014.

Despite the whopping amount of money the association brings in, NONE of the collegiate athletes themselves get a single penny. Collegiate athletes deserve to be paid.

The bright, red, hair of Archie Andrews is undoubtedly a memorable characteristic of the popular comic book series named for his character.  In 2017, the universe surrounding the still-running comic series was reimagined into a TC show called “Riverdale.” The show, on The CW Network, featured a cast of up and comic actors like Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and KJ Apa as Archie Andrews himself. And although based on settings and characters from the comics, the first season of the show is an entirely different story. After airing the show quickly grew a cult following, and especially for binge-watchers like me when it was released on Netflix. In October 2017, the show began its second season and has now utilized its captivating plot and large following to spread important messages.

"I’m tired of it."
"Through."
"I’ve had enough!"

All are quotes said at the turning point of the typical ‘Chick Flick.’ They also happen to be my thoughts on these generic, overrated, and redundant films.

It’s usually around this time of the year when the ‘Chick Flick’ makes its appearance in mainstream again.

"Here we go again another cliche chick flick released into theaters…”

This is the thought of many when another romance movie is produced. Chick flicks are viewed as being too sappy, as many believe once you’ve seen one romantic movie you have seen them all. Storylines are alike, depressing scenes, and then the outcomes always end in happily ever after.

School in America: safety and shootings

On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza grabbed three guns from his home - a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle made by Bushmaster and pistols made by Glock and Sig Sauer - and went to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

In total, 20 children were killed along with 6 teachers.

Many politicians have come together to come up with a way to stop mass shootings. But how far do they really get?

Within months after the Sandy Hook shooting, did anyone ever really hear about it? The president stopped addressing it, we stopped reading articles about it online. And the politicians who swore to decrease the amount of any mass shootings came to a quiet halt.

With the Republicans so against restricting our gun laws, and the Democrats wanting something to change, and blaming the actual gun on the event, it’s difficult to even come together as one, even under the heinous circumstances.
