By Marissa Burd Junior Editor-in-Chief It has been nearly 27 years since we’ve last heard from “IT,” which is Stephen King’s 1986 novel. In November of 1990, a miniseries based off of the book aired on ABC over a span of two nights. Now, IT reappeared in theatres on Sept. 28 2017, which is coincidentally 27 years from its 1990 miniseries. Rotten Tomatoes, a review website by Fandago, gave the 1990 series a 57%. On the other hand, the 2017 version of IT was given a 85% by the website. The 2017 version of IT appropriately portrayed the 1980s setting with its use of characters and setting. Director Andy Muschietti creates a visual of what the eighties looked like for today’s, more modern audience. The town is called Derry, which is located in Maine, and its 1988 when Bill’s younger brother Georgie goes missing.
Georgie is the first person to encounter IT, who introduces himself as “Pennywise the Dancing Clown,” whose face is most definitely scarier than it’s voice. IT is something that cannot be explained in other words than “a clown,” who feeds off of kids in the town of Derry and haunts them with their worst nightmare. Shortly after Georgie’s disappearance, two other local kids follow. After things calm down for a year, Bill and his friends let go for the summer, once school ends, in hopes of forgetting the loss of Georgie. Then, when Ben, also known as “the new kid,” arrives in town, things seem to fall into place. Due to his shyness, Ben finds himself as the only kid in the library during the first day of summer, where he encounters his worst fear-followed by IT. After this encounter, he finds himself caught up with the school bullies, but if it wasn’t for them, he never would have befriended any of the kids from “The Loser’s Club.” The Loser’s Club consists of Bill, Richie, Eddie, Stanley, and now Ben and his new friend Beverly. After the group of kids all befriend Ben, they find out how much researching he’s done on Derry in the library. With all of his information, The Loser’s Club comes to realization that the mass of missing kids occurs every 27 years. One by one, all of The Loser’s Club encounter IT, along with their own fears. The movie was filled with loud and horrid sound effects whenever IT came around to startle the audience. Already making over $300 million in the box office, IT is the must see thriller for this Halloween.
