Staff Writer From the puppy face to Face Swap, Snapchat's new lenses are one of the most popular features on the app with a range of lenses and filters to choose from. From everyday people, to celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Ariana Grande, and many more Snapchat users all across the globe are experimenting with the new lenses on Snapchat. Using the filters, you can transform the way you look and add special effects to your snaps. These special effects track the location of your head and respond to facial movements like the opening of your mouth or raising of your eyebrows. The lenses are replaced with new ones daily, but are available to purchase to keep your favorite. Here in Red Lion Area Senior High School, students are all about Snapchat. “I never use my actual camera, it’s always Snapchat,” said junior Ashton Shoup. “Face Swap is my favorite.” “You gotta get the good lighting, tilt the head, camera facing toward you. It might take a few times to get it right,” added Shoup. “If I could change anything I would change up the filters, I feel like we have the same ones all the time,” said Paige Gartland. To jazz up your snaps first open Snapchat and then use the front-facing camera on your device to put yourself in the frame. It works best when your head is mostly straight to the camera and in direct light. Tap and hold your face for a second and a menu option will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap again and quick white lines should appear lined up with your face, then you’re ready to explore a variety of bizarre lenses.

Staff Writer Pinterest, launched in March of 2010, has become popular in the lives of many Red Lion students. Many turn to pinterest for guidance to their everyday lives. Pinterest is a website and application that offers the sharing of DIY (Do It Yourself) Fashion, Food, and many more categories onto ones “boards”. These boards are created and decorated by the “pinner” virtually and serve as categories for the different things pinned. Other categories on Pinterest include gifts, videos, men’s fashion, education, tattoos, outdoors, and quotes. Pinterest is also used by over 70 million people all over the world. Red Lion student, senior Emily Hylind said, “I go onto Pinterest for hairstyles, beauty tips, and fashion ideas. Pinterest is where I learned to do things like my makeup, and I learned how to wear certain outfits. I also go for work out plans, and recently I’ve been learning how to decorate my future dorm room.” Another Red Lion student has only begun to use it more recently in the past couple of months. senior Stone McCreary “I was introduced to Pinterest by Mr. Christian Castle. I pin clothing ideas, quotes, superheros, I mean basically everything. I even found most of the stuff for my Christmas list on Pinterest.” And it looks like not only the senior class has been involved in the Pinterest phenomenon. Jayda Francisco, grade 10 said, “I look at Pinterest for all the DIY, even though I never attempt to do it. I just love looking at everything on there.” By Kelly Heilman
Staff Writer Many students in Red Lion Senior High own a smartphone these days. Many of which use their device during class because many teachers now allow the use of personal technology in their classrooms. A few students were surveyed to see if using their smartphone during class is beneficial to their learning experience. When asked if smartphones were helpful in classes Senior, Gabby McCarty said, “Yes because it’s a faster way to look up information needed to complete our classwork versus taking the time to sign in and wait to get connected to the school’s computers.” Senior Natalie Barrett was asked if she finds herself getting distracted by using her smartphone in class and said, “Yes, all the time because I am always listening to my music, and always finding something exciting because of how much phones can do these days.” When asked how she thought using smartphones could be beneficial to her learning experience Senior, Sierra Donovan responded with, “If I ever need an accurate definition I can just look it up.” All three seniors were asked if any of their teachers did not allow the use of smartphones during class, and all of them answered yes. Some Red Lion teachers still prefer the traditional, “no phones in the classroom,” way of teaching. Mrs. Samantha Smith was asked if she thought that having smartphones in class was beneficial to students. She said, “Yes, this way students can function to a higher level and it will prepare them for future employment.” When asked if she believed that smartphones are causing too many distractions, K-12 technology education coach Mrs. Samantha Smith answered, “It depends. There is a maturity level that comes with the technology. Kids should be taught what is and is not appropriate.” There are many differing opinions on the use of technology in the classroom, but survey says the outcome is looking positive. Photo courtesy of Ouya By Joseph Skibicki Staff Writer As the rumors of new consoles begin to emerge, Android prepares to launch its own console. Android’s new console the Ouya is going to have download-only titles to play, which are said to be free. Androids plan for this console is for it to be extremely cost effective with the console costing only 99$, and releasing a new console upgraded console every year. With this console being so cheap android is hoping it can break its way in to console market and take on the heavy waits like Sony and Microsoft. The Ouya launches in retail in early June but if you were a Kick Starter backer you will receive yours this month. One Puck allows devices to be charged with use of beverages. By Joseph Skibicki Tech Writer How often does your cell phone die and you don't have an outlet to charge it? Have no fear, new technology is here! The One Puck, by Epiphany Labs, will charge your phone by simply using your drink. The One Puck is a coaster that uses the temperature of your drink to charge your phone. Using Sterling engines, it takes the temperature and turns it into energy. Putting out five watts at maximum, the equivalent to a normal charger, it satisfies owners of the One Puck. The One Puck is small enough to stick in a pocket or throw in a purse. If Epiphany Labs can get 100,000 dollars by April 6, the device will go for be up for sale in late June. Courtesy of CBSNews.com By Joseph Skibicki Tech Writer On January eighth the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show kicked off and ran until January eleventh, showcasing some of the best technology to be released in the near future and the Leonid has the scoop. The first amazing thing that caught our eyes were the amazing tablets. First there was Panasonic’s 4k Windows 8 tablet. It’s a 20 inch tablet making this one of the biggest tablets ever. The tablet has a high definition screen with 230 pixels per inch this tablet makes bigger better. The second was the Vizio Windows 8 tablet. This tablet is running a full version of Windows 8, not an RT version. The tablet has no fans because it’s running AMDs 260 processor which should should keep the system cool. The tablet can run the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at medium settings, proving this system is very powerful. As 2013 begins to roll in we are beginning to see and hear more and more about the console race that’s said to begin this year. One of the new consoles is the Piston by Xi3. This console is super small compared to current consoles--it can be held in one hand! The piston functions as a computer able to run Linux or Windows. The console is also easily upgraded with a card system that can be easily switched out. The next thing that caught our attention was Youms new flexible OLED. This screen stole the show for us. This screen a plastic OLED screen that is paper thin and bendable because OLD screens create their own light, no back light is needed. This makes it possible for these screens to be so thin. The idea of this is mind blowing and could be a massive game changer for cell phones and tablets, and it is a project we should all keep our eyes on. With all these cool pieces of technology we can already see that 2013 is gonna be a good year for the technology industry. Keep reading the Leonid as we will be covering all these tech items and more as they are released. |
