Social Media Editor Since its release in July 2016, “Pokemon Go” has taken fans by storm. The game has been downloaded by more than 130 million iOS and Android users. It has already once surpassed the number of daily Twitter users. After topping the number of daily Tinder users in its’ first month of release, there’s no denying that this game is something to talk about. The craze continued through the summer, and local residents of Red Lion would gather in town to play and pick up in-game items at local shops. “It’s very addicting to play,” freshman Dylan Zeller said. However, senior Alec Jacobs said “It blocks traffic when they play in the square.” By Elizabeth Winpigler
Staff Writer From the puppy face to Face Swap, Snapchat's new lenses are one of the most popular features on the app with a range of lenses and filters to choose from. From everyday people, to celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Ariana Grande, and many more Snapchat users all across the globe are experimenting with the new lenses on Snapchat. Using the filters, you can transform the way you look and add special effects to your snaps. These special effects track the location of your head and respond to facial movements like the opening of your mouth or raising of your eyebrows. The lenses are replaced with new ones daily, but are available to purchase to keep your favorite. Here in Red Lion Area Senior High School, students are all about Snapchat. “I never use my actual camera, it’s always Snapchat,” said junior Ashton Shoup. “Face Swap is my favorite.” “You gotta get the good lighting, tilt the head, camera facing toward you. It might take a few times to get it right,” added Shoup. “If I could change anything I would change up the filters, I feel like we have the same ones all the time,” said Paige Gartland. To jazz up your snaps first open Snapchat and then use the front-facing camera on your device to put yourself in the frame. It works best when your head is mostly straight to the camera and in direct light. Tap and hold your face for a second and a menu option will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap again and quick white lines should appear lined up with your face, then you’re ready to explore a variety of bizarre lenses. By Raven Rodriguez Staff Writer Social media heavily affects teens and their body image. The awareness one has of their body image can come as a result of the things they group with. “It starts with exposure at a young age and people that they look up to,” former health teacher Mrs. Sam Smith said. If the person that someone looks up to is a certain body weight or type, they may try to mimic them and achieve a similar physique, even if it’s not necessarily healthy. Comments that are repeatedly said over and over while growing up can also have an impact. It can also have things to do with like what you see when you Are younger, from barbie dolls for girls and figurines for boys. and even more the disney princesses. Body image can be linked to seeking attention. Body image issues don’t only affect girls, they affect guys just as much. It can be in ways as simple as taking vitamin supplements (and not being in a sport) to having a better looking body. If one grows up with parents that are very health conscious, it is very possible that they will grow up to be health conscious as well. It can either have a good impact or the complete opposite. Social media tries to portray models as being healthy even if their appearance is not realistic for the average teenager or healthy. “They think that if they see it on social media it’s okay, but anyone can put anything on social media. Not everything that is on social media has a reliable source and people don’t seem to notice that,” said Mrs. Smith. With this day and age, people post things all over social media for attention/approval. It impacts their self image. Almost everyone goes on social media, it’s a place of comfort for some people. Having body image issues can lead to low self esteem but its not only body image that leads to having a low self esteem. It can also lead to things such as eating disorders. Health teachers, guidance counselors, a doctor, or a parent are all reputable sources to seek out if one is struggling with body image issues, and ultimately one can make goals with them. Staff Writer Over the course of the past year one group seems to have become an issue on everyone’s mind. This group is ISIS. In addition to their already caused mayhem, the group has begun to raise even more concern by recruiting teens across the globe to join their ranks. Some teens have been abandoning their homes and traveling halfway around the world to join this radical group in their cause. Though reasons for these teens joining are unclear, it has been lead to believe that some of the causes may be the teens searching for their true identity or purpose, or perhaps they joined simply for the excitement. Whatever the reason may be, it is clear that ISIS is contacting these teens somehow. New information released by CNN reveals that the main tool for recruitment has been the internet. ISIS has been luring young people into their group by posting propaganda such as videos made to look like scenes from a movie. The group has also used the internet to communicate with the young people interested in joining them. So far more than 100 Americans are believed to have joined ISIS, but Americans are not the only ones being affected by the group’s propaganda. Teens in countries such as England, Austria, Turkey, and many more have committed the same act of trading their normal lives for that of a terroristic gunman. Not only are teens joining ISIS but some even realize their mistake after it is already too late. some of these new recruits have contacted their families informing them they would like to escape. unfortunately it is not an easy task to leave a group like ISIS. Luckily some teens have been intercepted by officials on their course to Syria. Through the teens caught they have been able to find out more information about ISIS’s predatorial recruiting tactics and will hopefully soon put an end to the group’s strange and immoral style of recruitment. Staff Writer Pinterest, launched in March of 2010, has become popular in the lives of many Red Lion students. Many turn to pinterest for guidance to their everyday lives. Pinterest is a website and application that offers the sharing of DIY (Do It Yourself) Fashion, Food, and many more categories onto ones “boards”. These boards are created and decorated by the “pinner” virtually and serve as categories for the different things pinned. Other categories on Pinterest include gifts, videos, men’s fashion, education, tattoos, outdoors, and quotes. Pinterest is also used by over 70 million people all over the world. Red Lion student, senior Emily Hylind said, “I go onto Pinterest for hairstyles, beauty tips, and fashion ideas. Pinterest is where I learned to do things like my makeup, and I learned how to wear certain outfits. I also go for work out plans, and recently I’ve been learning how to decorate my future dorm room.” Another Red Lion student has only begun to use it more recently in the past couple of months. senior Stone McCreary “I was introduced to Pinterest by Mr. Christian Castle. I pin clothing ideas, quotes, superheros, I mean basically everything. I even found most of the stuff for my Christmas list on Pinterest.” And it looks like not only the senior class has been involved in the Pinterest phenomenon. Jayda Francisco, grade 10 said, “I look at Pinterest for all the DIY, even though I never attempt to do it. I just love looking at everything on there.” |
