By Shawn Gunarich Multimedia Editor Kiersten and Gwendolyn Lloyd, sisters and best friends from birth, dominate as freshman mid-distance and distance runners. These freshman sisters both have exceeded regular season, both qualifying for the 800 meter in counties among other events. But the Lloyd name is not unknown to Red Lion as the life coach and father to the twin runners Brad Lloyd, a 1984 graduate, also excelled at his choice sport--wrestling. Mr. Lloyd was a three time county and district champion while here at Red Lion. “He’s hard on us,” Gwen Lloyd said “but he only want’s us to succeed and to get better.” The Lloyd twins know if they have no one else they can always turn to each other, “Having Gwen means that I always have a running partner, and someone to push me,” Kiersten said.
They also have their minds set on the future with counties on May 12, “I’m looking forward to counties, there is a lot more competition,” Kiersten said. Counties is the first step of any postseason, followed by districts and states. “I’m excited for counties,” Gwen said, “I will be running the eight hundred and am really hoping to PR (personal record).” Counties is the most competitive event to qualify for that the Lloyd twins have seen this season. Only a handful of athletes make it this far in the season, let alone freshman twins. The odds were against them but they prevailed.
