By Shawn Gunarich Multimedia Editor Red Lion girls volleyball make it to state level competition after winning districts in a five set nail-biter against Hempfield. Senior captain Lindsey Blevins expressed what the win was like for her. “It’s such a relieving feeling because we know what we worked for,” Blevins said. “Four years and we can finally say we won. Also I love banners and medals.” Blevins received the set and slammed the win against Suburban on Oct. 25. This would set the team up for three district matches, in which Red Lion would have to win all three if they wished to become 2016’s district 3 champs. On Nov. 1, Red Lion clashed with Ephrata. Red Lion took the “W” in three sets. Lady Lions then headed to a matchup with Elizabethtown, who also never made it past the third set since the Lions would win the shutout 3-0.
Red Lion was staring defeat in the face in third set as Hempfield took the first two sets and only lost the third by four points. Closing the last set senior captain Logan Dontell scored five consecutive aces to end the last set with a win for Red Lion 25-18. In the fifth set, sophomore Madelyn Grim tacked on 36 assists and 14 digs of her own as well as Blevins ending with 14 digs and Lauren Enfield ending with 18. Red Lion would take districts in the fifth set with a score of 15-10. This made the 2016 girls volleyball team team the first to compete on a state level. “As long as we stay humble and go in knowing anything can happen so we have to play to our highest potential each game.” Lauren Enfield senior captain said. Red Lion took on Garnet Valley on Nov. 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Central High School for their first matchup of states. The Lions lost in the first two games of the match and were not able to catch up. The season ended with a 0-3 loss against Garnet Valley.
