By Brody Patmore Sports Editor The Red Lion Area Senior High School girls volleyball team is gearing up for a new season. With the impressive accomplishments last year which included winning both the county and district tournaments and qualifying, finishing 8 for the state tournament it won’t be easy to repeat such a historical run. The team lost some key pieces from the team last year who helped make the year so successful. Players like Lauren Enflield, Logan Dontell, and Lindsey Blevins will be greatly missed and hard to replace. Dontell and Blevins were both selected to YAIAA’s first team all-star team last season.
Head coach Heather Schoemaker expects the team to “continue to improve themselves individually and as a team.” Losing such key players is not good for any team. A weakness of the team is “catching the younger newer varsity players up to our style at the varsity level,” Coach Schoemaker said. The team does have areas of strength though. “We have experience in defense and serving aggressively,” she said. Seniors of the team this year are Autumn Zeplo, Maddie Lamotte, and Sophie Guthrie. Since these are the older and more experienced players, they are the ones who will have the job of showing the younger players the style of play the team wants. “This game has six players on the court and all of them need to step up and be leaders on and off the court,” Coach Schoemaker said. On Sept. 25, they play Susquehannock at home. The following day, Sept. 26, they play Dover at home as well. These first few games are important to get off to a good start and accomplish such big things like last year.
