By Brody Patmore Sports Editor The Red Lion field hockey team has been very strong in the past few years. Finishing last season with a record of 11-6 proved they’re by no means any slouch in York’s YAIAA Division I. The team took some big hits losing great players from last season including Emily Gillmen, Kynslee Shepard, Amy Maciejewski, Jackie Golden, and two goalies, some of whom won awards for their great play. For the most part these were the leaders of the team, and they’ll be hard to replace. Head coach Carol Gillmen is expecting players like Sam Collis, to be a big offensive presence. Hayley Taylor, defense is what is expected from her. Other players like Peyton Shima, Isabelle Kocman, and Jordan Sleeth will be the driving force of the team this year.
“Everyone needs to step up,” Coach Gillmen said. Last year even with a solid record of 11 wins and six losses they didn’t qualify for counties. A goal this year is for the team to get to the county and district playoff tournaments. To get there? “Compete every game,” Gillmen said. “Finish offensively and have relentless defense,” she added. They are currently standing with a solid record of 5-2. The next two home games are Sept. 25, against Dallastowm, and Sept. 28, against Spring Grove.
