By Brody Patmore Staff Writer The boys volleyball team is coming off of a very impressive and successful 2016 season, and the team this year is trying to replicate last year’s tremendous success. The great season the team had last year included making it to the county finals, district semifinals, and even qualifying for the state tournament. The team will be missing some players from last year. A few of these players include Dillon Hildebrand, John Longnecker, Bennett Frey, and Caedan Sweeney. These players will be greatly missed for what they brought to the team whether it was a big hit, a perfect set, or a great defensive play. But those roles will be filled. Players that Head Coach Rick Torbert is expecting to be leaders this year include setter Christopher Muller, outside hitter Tristan Fuentes, outside hitter/opposite hitter Jake Patterson, defensive specialist Colby Myers, and middle hitter John Janowiak. “These players have the most experience,” Coach Torbert said. A big strength the team has in their favor is the large number of returning players. A lot of seniors that will have leading roles this year have played volleyball for three or even all four years of their high school careers. Simply being around the sport that long could be a huge advantage which other teams might not have.
Coach Torbert has high expectations for the team despite their loss of key seniors. “This team has a lot of talent but not a lot of experience in game situations,” he said. “We will be a very competitive team.” Overall he expects a great season ahead. The team will be playing at three very strong tournaments this year because of their success last year. The tournaments are at Hempfield on March 25, at Dallastown on March 29, and at Northeastern on April 1. Volleyball has a rich history at Red Lion and this year’s team is trying to create their own legacy for future teams to look back on.
