By Corey Eyler Staff Writer It was a dark cool morning when 5,000 people lined up to run the annual Turkey Trot race on the morning of Thanksgiving for the YMCA. Caleb Gatchell, 21, of Red Lion won the race with a chip time of 15:00.08. Gatchell ran for the track team and cross country team for Red Lion during his high school career. The fundraising for the Turkey Trot is very important because it goes to the YMCA Membership for all organization. This organization offers help to anyone who can not pay for the membership. Without the help it would cause them to not be able to stay fit in a comfortable and safe environment. “Without the fundraising for this event, many families would go without memberships that they greatly need. This event is very important to the families that come in to the YMCA every day,” Karen Ruppert, race director, said.
The Turkey Trot is important because it brings families together to train and to run in the race together. It creates everlasting bonds and memories that will last a lifetime. “The race was a lot of fun during it and while training, I spent a lot of time with my father, and grew closer to him. It was a pretty easy run, and enjoyable experience I would definitely recommend it to everyone. I would love to do it again,” freshman Aubrie Wise said. This race is called the Turkey Trot because it is run every year on the morning of Thanksgiving. This event has been run for 20 years with the first race only have about 200 runners. The race has grown so much today that now for the past three years of the race there has been 5,000 plus runners that have come out. “This is my second year doing the race. I have always had a good time. It may be a race but all of the people and bystanders are very encouraging with nobody judging you. I look forward to doing this for many years to come,” Caroline Pritchard a senior at Red Lion High School said. “It is not a race to me anymore it is more of an event. It is the place to be on Thanksgiving and I hope to see it build even greater as the years go by,” Ruppert said.
