Red Lion’s varsity swim team has made rebuilding a priority this year.
“We had a top few swimmers graduate last year,” said Hannah Coligan, head varsity swim coach, “so we need the younger swimmers to step up and fill spots.”
And a few of them have. Coach Coligan called junior Jacob Lorenzen “an energizer bunny” and the “master of distance,” while sophomore David White is versatile with strength in various strokes.
On the girls’ team, senior Claire Aggen is one of the team’s strongest swimmers, both in and out of the pool. “She can out-bench, -squat, and -deadlift anyone on the team,” Coligan said.
Jessica Sun, also a senior, is known as a “silent assassin” as she sneaks up on her opponents to win many of the races that she is in.
These athletes cannot carry the team on their own, however, so Coach Coligan has been busy preparing swimmers for the upcoming season.
To do so, the team began preseason in October. Since then, the team has focused on improving their strength and endurance outside of the pool, with the idea that they will then perform better in the water.
Also on dry land, Coach Coligan has instilled a new habit among her athletes in the form of swim journals.
“The goal is to have them refer to their long term and short terms goals every day and say what they did that day to help them achieve those goals,” Coach Coligan said. “We hope this self reflection will help improve their effort in practice and meets.”
While the season officially started on Nov. 18, the first test of the team’s ability without last year’s seniors will be the dual meet on Dec. 15, when the Lions travel to Northeastern for the first meet of the season.
The team’s toughest challenges this season will more than likely come from Dallastown and Central York. “They have a depth that a lot of schools do not have,” Coligan said. Red Lion will face off with these foes on Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, respectively.
Despite the loss of strong seniors last year, Red Lion’s varsity swim team has begun the rebuilding process so that they are ready to tackle another season.
“I am very excited for this season,” Coach Coligan said. “We have an amazing group of kids that work so hard. If we can stay healthy and injury free we will do great.”
