By Nicole Belcher Staff Writer The weather was cool and sunny, the sun was at its brightest and the scene was set for Red Lion’s Cross Country’s last home meet. Junior Cameron George was head-to-head with an opposing runner when, nearing the end of the race, George sprinted past to cross the finish line. The cross country team is a young team, and the first year for some of the seniors. Jebediah Fregm, a home-schooled senior who started this year was inspired by his friends to run, surprised the coaches with his good times. He ran a 19:01 and came in fourth for the home meet to qualify for counties. Freshman Kiersten Lloyd, who is setting records at a young age, ran a 20:17, coming in second for the meet. Coach Stetter said, “She ran the fastest time on Red Lion’s course as a Red Lion runner.” Lloyd qualified for districts and the coach hopes she is in one of the faster groups at Counties. Senior Greg Potter said “She is going to do very well today.” Everyone expects great things from Lloyd. In fact, Lloyd competed in the District III Championships on Oct. 29 and earned 20th place with a time of 19:42. This competitive time qualified Lloyd for the state championships.
Senior Carter Beyer-who has been running on the team since sophomore-year is now a captain and he finished off the last home meet with a time of 20:01, coming in 15th for the boys. Beyer is now preparing for his last year at districts and counties and hopes to set a personal record Beyer says that “it’s not about the running but about watching your friends doing well, making friends, being a family more than a team.” With the seniors leaving this year, the underclassmen now have to step up and follow in the seniors’ footsteps with becoming a good role model for the new runners. Carter Beyer tried to be a good role model to the new runners and the underclassmen and helping them with becoming a better runner. Greg Potter, another senior this year who couldn’t run due to injuries was the team “cheerleader”. Potter would cheer everyone on at the races and traveling with the team to support the runners, cheering and clapping for all his teammates crossing the finish line. The team finished strong this year and now it is time for the teams to finish strong at counties and districts. Coach Stetter looks forward to seeing the young runners and the seniors finishing strong and hopes to see the underclassmen going out for next year.
