By Ian Adler and Rebecca Hosier Staff Writers Since September 29, 2000, over 13 years ago, 1,104 Israelis, and 6,829 Palestinians have been killed all because of a war that is over 3,000 long, according to ifamericansknew.org. As World War II came to a close and light was shed upon Nazi Germany’s actions, Britain and the US migrated some of the surviving Jews to the ancient holy land of Israel. With a previous history of land dispute and violence, the Palestinians and Jewish people battled for control of the land they believed was rightfully theirs. In 1948, as Israel became a recognized nation, fighting broke out between Jewish combatants seeking independence and Arab soldiers looking to protect their land. Before this, a civil war was also fought with an undetermined winner. The United Nations had formed the Partition Plan aiming at bringing peace to these two separate groups of people by dividing land among them fairly equally. Lust for control caused this agreement to be broken and more combat to arise. On December 11, 1948 the UN had also passed Resolution 194, which established the right for Arab refugees to return. Little conflicts and tension caused the Six Day War from June 5 to June 10, 1967. The largely outnumbered Israeli of about 100,000 seemed to decimate the Arab force of close to 240,000 according to wikipedia.org. Time has done little to cool the conflict between the Israeli and Palestinian governments. Today marks the highest level of tension yet between the opposing nations. In a Washington Post article titled “Some Israeli leaders question peace talks with Palestinians after Weekend Attacks”, the Israeli Minister of Economy and Commerce stated, “Twenty years after the Oslo accords, our partner has not changed. We cannot make peace with terrorists who throw the bodies of soldiers into pits; we must fight them without mercy” Upon graduation of high school, it is required that Israeli men and women serve at least two years in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). This mandatory service is not up for debate, as there is little room to relax or trust whoever is walking down the street next to you. There has been constant breaking of treaties on both sides, both Israeli and Palestinian. Since anyone can remember, the Hebrew (Jewish) people have been enslaved, exiled from their land and under constant oppression and attack. Today, their enemies include anyone from the Nazis of World War II to the majority of Muslims and Muslim countries who outnumber them by a significant margin. Contrary to popular belief Palestine and the surrounding countries are not a “wasteland full of religious extremist screaming about infidels and the holy jihad,” the area of Palestine and Israel has flourished throughout history. The root of terrorism against America comes from our support of the Israelis in the conflict. The US gives 8.5 million dollars a day to the Israeli government each day. If you know anything about religious roots, you would know that the Jewish and Muslim peoples do not get along very well, and with America’s support of the mainly Jewish Israelis, it makes us a prime target for terror attacks. To separate the territories, Israel is in the process of constructing a barrier wall that measures about 440 miles long, eight meters high, and 60 meters wide. In addition to the wall, Palestinian property is being confiscated and being built upon. The settlements are then sold at a reduced amount to anyone who can prove Jewish lineage on their mother’s side. If you are still wondering why these two cannot just get along and be the “bigger person” (or in this case, society), the answer is clear as holy water. There is no answer.
