By Marissa Burd Junior Editor-in-Chief Over the years at Red Lion High School, students have started a tradition to support their sports teams, specifically varsity football. This group of school spirited students organized a Student Section and call themselves the “Rowdies.” With every new school year, a graduating senior passes down the role of being the leader of the Student Section to a rising senior. This year, the legacy was passed down from last year’s leader, Tristan Fuentes (2017), to two seniors, Cole Gipe and Micah Davis. “Our main goal is to get everyone, including the younger kids, to be involved in everything we do,” Davis said. “If we just have a positive vibe, our chances of being better in the student section will improve greatly.”
Gipe’s ideas are “to have a nice student section for every game, whether home or away. We’re planning on going to every game.” With last year’s student body indicating in survey results that the student section was too exclusive, Davis said, “Absolutely everyone is welcome to sit and participate with the student section.” The number of students who participate in the Rowdies is so large, so the two leaders plan on organizing fan buses or a carpool among friends. The Rowdies will dress themselves accordingly to a planned theme for each game. The leaders choose the theme for a specific game, and it can be based on of the time of the year, the importance of the game, or even what the players are wearing. In October, there is a game dedicated to breast cancer awareness, called the “Pink Game,” and Rowdies are encouraged to dress up in all pink. It is preferred by the two leaders that each student dresses accordingly to the theme. “Kids won’t be excluded if they don’t participate in the theme,” said Gipe, “but we highly encourage kids to participate to make it better and more fun.” Red Lion’s former student section leader Austin Kelly, a graduate from 2016, explained how the Rowdies were brought together. “When I was a leader, we represented the pride and love we have for Red Lion,” Kelly said. “The adversity we went through had an impact on all of us as students.” During Austin Kelly’s senior year, his class suffered, alongside the rest of the school and community, the loss of two football players, Stone Hill and Nick Mankin, and a beloved teacher, Mrs. Carrie Smeltzer. Kelly believes the difficult times of loss brought not only the students together, but also the community. “We want everyone to come out and feel welcomed and comfortable in the student section,” said Davis. “We just want everyone to be hype and have fun." The Rowdies put up flyers to promote their social media accounts. They can be found on Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat to notify the students about upcoming themes and any important information.
