By Shawn Gunarich Multimedia Editor Red Lion students will pick up the slack of a pre-established recycling program in a campaign that kicked off in November. With the help of Mrs. Heather Fogell, science teacher and recycling activist, and Mr. Mark Harvey, head custodian, students will be tasked with picking up the recycling from classrooms due to a lack of resources among custodial staff. Red Lion Area Senior High School has considered starting a student-run recycling program for a long time. Recycling does exist at the school school, and has for a while, but students were asked to fill the gaps in the existing program. “The school has all the necessary grounds and maintenance, but due to the custodial staff spread so thin, there is not enough time or help in the day,” Mrs. Fogell said. “With the push of student help, we should be able to successfully get the ball rolling.” The custodial staff has been keeping up with what they can. They have been recycling cardboard and tin cans from lunch, but Mr. Harvey expressed his desire to start the student-run program.
“There’s just not enough time or staff in the day to recycle on a daily basis,” Mr. Harvey said. “Kids now of days are more Earth-friendly than in the past, and my hope is that they will monitor each other and take the initiative to recycle.” This little-to-no-cost recycling program kicked off in the beginning of November. Student volunteers will travel room to room collecting the recyclables from green or blue bins. The custodial staff will then empty the waste in the recycling bin outside of the high school. “On my walk, here I picked up three water bottles,” Mr. Harvey said. “The idea is to get these kids in the habit and the mind set to recycle on their own.” Mrs. Fogell explained the proper procedure for discarding recyclables as rinsing out liquid and placing recyclables in the recycling bins. Earth day everyday students will collect recyclables on the following days:
More announcements regarding the recycling program will be posted around the school and more information will be revealed on the announcements.
