By Paul Jones Sports Coordinator As hard as it might be to believe, Russia, Tokyo, and Red Lion all have an important similarity between them. All of the previously mentioned locations have all been selected by certain governing bodies to hold very important gatherings. Fifa voted on having Russia host the next World Cup, the Olympic Committee chose Tokyo to hold the next summer games, and the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils allowed for Red Lion and its Student Council to hold the next Pennsylvania state conference. Last year, members of Student Council had to travel to Altoona High School and give a presentation on why they should host the conference. Altoona High School is the home of the PASC and also where it was founded in 1932. “We bid against North Penn High School which is near Philadelphia and debated for about an hour,” Student Council adviser Jane Dennish said. “There were about 50 people who voted there and they chose Red Lion.”
Now with having the winning bid in hand, Student Council now moves on to the big task of actually putting on the conference. Freshman Gianna Dovell was elected as President of the entire PASC and is also in charge of running the state conference itself. Red Lion’s Student Council also had to select two co-chairs in sophomore Emily Cutler and sophomore Jacob Franciscus. “My role within council is to run the conference with the help of my co-chairs and advisors,” PASC president Gianna Dovell said. “We oversee conference committees to make sure the process runs smooth.” In addition to setting up said committees, Student Council as a whole had to decide on what their budget would to be. The budget that Student Council came up with was $150,000 and is actively trying to fundraise in order to meet that goal. They only have to raise in between $40,000 and $50,000 as they are expecting around 1,000 students to attend and pay a registration fee. “So far we have contacted different businesses and asked for corporate sponsorship,” Mrs. Dennish said. “So people have donated any where from $25 to $5,000 and local businesses have been extremely supportive of this conference.” Now with all this money being raised and all the commotion that will come when the conference finally happens in November, how will this affect the students and community of Red Lion? Well much like how an Olympic games brings people and revenue to the host city, the same will be done in Red Lion. All of the 1,000 attendees will need lodging and food which will help local businesses, along with those very people looking for entertainment and other fun activities. Then there is all of the ideas that come from the conference itself that helps the students of all the schools around Pennsylvania. “The kids are able to attend workshops that are student led,” Mrs. Dennish said. “We got wish week and RSVP from the state conference and from kids attending workshops.” Even as this has been a process that back in January of 2016, there is still a long way to go before Red Lion’s Student Council will be able to host the conference. With such a large task at hand, Student Council has also reached out to other student organizations around the high school. They have reached to groups like the National Honor Society and Tech Ed department in order to create the best experience for the attendees. The conference will officially take place from Nov. 2 to Nov. 4 and Red Lion will be a breeding ground for ideas and hopefully come up with solutions to every problem that they can think of.
