By Carrie Knight Multimedia Editor Red Lion FFA had another busy start to the school year, now they prepare for many more upcoming events. “We have several exciting and memorable activities planned for the year,” said Rebecca Parsons, the current FFA President. “We hope to get the school involved in community service activities, and knowledgement of agricultural education. I am excited to see what our chapter can accomplish.” Falls skills day is coming up for the club in early November. This is when members from FFA come together from Adams, Franklin, and York counties. Throughout the day individuals will compete in CDE’s (Career Development Event) including apple judging, aquatics, tractor driving, forestry, and agronomy. The FFA National Conference is the week of October 23 in Indianapolis this year. Red Lion only goes to this conference every other year, this year being their off year. The national conference is when FFA members from the nation come together.
Even though the members are not attending this year they are still celebrating. The entire conference is live streamed, this being, after school the members will get together after school and watch it. Coming up during the convention, Red Lion FFA members will have the opportunity to receive the Greenhand Degree, which is the first degree a member can receive. There are many requirements for this degree, and some include being enrolled in agricultural education, learning and explaining the FFA Creed, motto, salute, and mission statement, and also describing the meaning of the FFA emblem and colors. The FFA chapter has a special initiation for those receiving the degree. The ones receiving Greenhand must make a greenhand shirt and wear it for the ceremony, keeping it uncovered the entire time. The recipient then has the opportunity to receive a jacket if they can recite all 5 paragraphs from the Creed. If they can only recite half of the 5 they receive half a jacket. If they can recite even a paragraph they receive a scarf or tie. Greenhand is awarded first, and then in December the chapter degree will be awarded. Both of these degrees will be given during clubs. Starting in April, students will also be able to apply for white rose, and this award is given at the FFA banquet. Rebecca Parsons and Tanner Snelbaker are currently working on applying for the keystone degree, this will be awarded during mid winter convention in January.
