Throughout the school year, Red Lion’s FFA participates in numerous competitions. Some of the earliest of these competitions occur at the York Fair, which was held in early September.
The group has had great success thus far, and it is thanks in part to their preparation. Regardless of the category of their event, students spend hours researching, collecting, and practicing after school to make sure that they are ready for their competitions.
Senior Allison Macklin earned first place in the Senior Division of the Dairy Skills Contest, which is made up of juniors and seniors. For the Junior Division, made up of freshmen and sophomores, Kaylee Van Hovel took third place, Casidee Crowl took fourth, and Leah Taylor took fifth place. Through these placings, their strength was shown in the dairy and livestock judging, both of which are favorites of many students.
“We kicked butt [in horticulture hall],” Macklin said. “Everyone who entered got either a first, second, or third place.” Included in horticulture hall are exhibits of grains, hay, vegetables, and fruits, as well as chapter entries.
The group’s Chapter Display Board, on the topic of antibiotics in beef, got them another second place.
With all of their success, it’s evident that the group has prepared themselves well. Regardless of the category of their event, students spend hours researching, collecting, and practicing after school to make sure that they are ready for their competitions.
And while the competitions are fun for those who participate, it is not the only part of competition that gets students most excited.
“The awards are the best part,” Macklin said, “along with the prize money.”
The money that students receive benefits both the chapter and the winner. Money received from chapter entries is then put into an account that the group can then use as a whole. Those who enter individually have checks written out to them, and they are allowed to use it as they wish.
With more competitions, activities, and leadership conferences to come, Red Lion’s FFA will have even more opportunities to showcase their knowledge and skills.
