By Ali Kochik Social Media Editor Following the graduation of seniors Ian Adler and Brooks Argento last year, some students were left wondering what would happen to the well-loved comedy segment, Hall Talk with Brooks and Ian. The 2016-2017 school year, however, has brought a new pair of students who have taken on the challenge of filling the void. Juniors Liam MacQuillan and Jared Pofi have adopted their own form of Hall Talk, a job they obtained somewhat by fate after a teacher recognized their comedic talent. “I had them in class last year and I just thought they were pretty popular guys and good students.” Mrs. Valerie Stone said. “I just thought they’d be able to pull it off and I think they’re doing a fabulous job.” Macquillan and Pofi took her recommendation and are continuing to run with it. “Our chemistry teacher, Mrs. Stone, is the one who suggested us to take this position,” MacQuillan said. “After that, we took her advice and came and talked to Mr. Blackwell, and that’s where things got started.”
“We just wanted to try new things, pretty much,” Pofi said. Despite taking lots of inspiration from Ian and Brooks’ segments, the boys are determined to keep things as original as possible by coming up with their own creative ideas, and make the show their own. “We like to see what people liked from theirs and put them in ours,” said Macquillan, “just in a different way.” Every week, Pofi and MacQuillan come up with an interesting or funny question, such as, “What is heavier, a ton of bricks or a ton of feathers?” Pofi then becomes camera-man, shooting a video of MacQuillan asking the students and staff of Red Lion High School. Their quick comedic style and witty edits always draw laughs from viewers. Both of the boys realize that they have big shoes to fill, but they are not about to shy away from the challenge. “I feel like it’s going well,” said Pofi. “It could be a little bit better, but we’re just starting out so eventually we’ll work our way up to where we want to be.” So far they are very grateful for the feedback they have received, and they are glad people are enjoying the content they work so hard to put out on a weekly basis. “We appreciate the positive comments,” said Macquillan, “and we like seeing people look forward to them every Friday.”
