By Caroline Frey Staff Writer The community is coming together to support a Red Lion graduate, Brooks Argento, who is currently battling a brain tumor. Brooks, a 2016 graduate, was a former football player for the Lions, co-host of Hall Talk and an honor roll student. He was just starting his freshman year at Pennsylvania State University when something did not seem right with his vision. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Since then, he has been staying at Hershey Medical Center on the road to recovery. While he is there, the community has stepped up and is helping in every way possible. Former Red Lion students and close friends, Brooke Gladfelter and Ian Adler, have teamed up to create #BravelikeBrooks bracelets to help Brooks and his family. When asked how many bracelets have been sold Gladfelter answered,“More than 1,000, and we are ordering 500 more. They just keep selling.” Alder agreed, adding, “We just wanted to help the family. The sales just blew out of proportion.” In one night at a Red Lion High School football game, they raised $1,490, making the total more than $4,000.
Not only are former students helping, the staff at Red Lion Area School District put together a care package to send to the Argento family. “The care package is filled with gift cards, stuffed lions, and anything else to brighten his day,” guidance counselor Mrs. Moser said. “We just want to support our students and former students.” In addition to the bracelets and the care package, a fundraiser was held at Rita’s Italian Ice on Oct. 2, 2016, in support of Brooks. Mr. Frank Argento, Brooks’s dad, gave his input on the communities support, “It is amazing that people are thinking about him, even if they do not know him,” he said. “It’s nice that people are continuing to think about him and send prayers.” The Argento family is extremely grateful for all the love and support by the community. Mr. Argento stated, “It’s easy to say you’re thinking of somebody, but to actually do it is remarkable.” There were moments when he was speechless and touched by the love of Red Lion community, holding back the tears and choking up as he spoke. Brooks will continue to fight this battle with his Red Lion community supporting him every step of the way. Mr. Argento stated with confidence that Brooks can defeat anything, “Brooks knows… He can feel it.”
