By Rachel Gelfand Staff Writer Red Lion’s symphonic and marching ensembles have been working tirelessly in preparation for their five day trip to Texas at the end of this month. The symphonic ensemble is working toward a music clinic. The music clinic will center around time with the director of bands at St. Mary’s University. “Since the symphonic band is a class that meets every day, we get to work on the repertoire pretty often,” band director Curtis Crone said. The marching ensemble, however, is practicing after school and is in the process of learning a piece for the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, arguably one of the most eventful points of the trip. It is 2.6 miles long and passes through the heart of downtown San Antonio, right past the Alamo. All floats and people involved within the parade must be illuminated in some way, so each student will be wearing 40 LED lights each.
“I’m most excited for the parade,” junior Miranda Johnson said. “It may be long, but it’s definitely one of the highlights of my time there.” Through this parade, the Marching Lions will be seen in person by 750,000 people, televised to the entire state of Texas, and streamed nationally. “I pick the trips based on what will give the community and school the most exposure, and San Antonio offered that experience for our music students,” Crone said. Both ensembles get to participate in a trip to Six Flags Fiesta Texas, explore the River City Walk, take a flat boat tour of the Paseo del Rio, visit the Tower of the Americas, visit the Institute of Texan Culture, and get to eat dinner at the Diamond W. Longhorn Ranch. “I’m excited for the flight to Texas, since I’ve never been on one,” freshman Michael Lorenzen said. “I’m definitely most excited to get to explore Texas with my friends, though.”
