Before you start reading this, I already know what you are thinking. “Why should I watch some cheesy, basic rom-com? I already know the ending, it’s pointless.” To be honest, I thought the exact same thing moments after I bought the tickets at Frank’s theater on Friday night.

I sat in the seats, munching on my popcorn with a scorn on my face as I watched previews for other movies also in theaters right now. The same thoughts ran through my head, “Wow, I should’ve seen a different movie.” But it was too late. I was already stuck watching this chick flick.

As soon as the music started, introducing the first scene, I was instantly captivated. I didn’t take my eyes off the screen the entire movie-- well, only to see where my popcorn was.

Leaving the movie theater, I was in awe. How could I have thought such harsh things about this movie?

The movie, based on the novel Crazy Rich Asians, written by Kevin Kwan in 2013, was already a huge hit. Fans from all over were overwhelmed with joy when the announcement of the movie was first released.

The story surrounds a young couple, Rachel Chu, an American Chinese, and Nick Young who travel to Singapore to attend his best friend’s wedding. Rachel is surprised to learn that Nick comes from one of the wealthiest families in Asia and struggles in dealing with the fame, money, and worst of all… Nick’s mother.

With that being said, here are 5 reasons why you need to see Crazy Rich Asians right now:

  1. It’s super funny.
Peik Lin Gogh, played by actress Awkwafina, is one of the funniest characters in the entire movie. Best friend to Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, she is always throwing in her two cents on the situation, whatever it may be. Her off the wall comments and laughter are contagious, making it impossible not to laugh.

    2.   The women are empowering.
In most generic rom-coms, we are used to the women characters letting the men take control and determine their happiness. In this movie, that is not the case. These women show that standing up for yourself and what you believe in is necessary for a strong relationship.

    3.   It’s the first all Asian cast in 25 years.
The last time a movie had an all Asian cast was in 1993, in The Joy Luck Club. To some people, this movie seemed like a huge risk in the movie industry, but for many, it is a big step forward, and something that will have a positive impact for many more years to come.

    4. The wedding scene...
The wedding scene is hands down, the best part of the entire movie. The music, the lighting, the characters-- everything about it makes you want to smile, cry, and swoon all at the same time.

         5.    It’s a tear jerker.
You will not be disappointed with this movie. Through the ups and downs in this flick, you will definitely be shedding some tears.

So get on your phone right now, reserve your tickets, and head to the movie theater tonight. You will not regret it.
