For junior and National Art Honor Society president Keely Bluett, art is something that runs in her blood.

“My family has always been kind of artistic,” she said. “I get it mostly from my dad, that type of mindset.”

Despite growing up in a family where art has been prevalent, Bluett didn’t come into her own artistic ability until she reached junior high. In seventh grade, she joined the art club, and in eighth grade, she collaborated on a mural for the school with a team of students.

As she came up to the high school, Bluett started off in an entry-level art class. As the years have progressed, she’s continued her art education with at least one art class every year, and has gone through the ranks of Red Lion’s NAHS chapter to become its president this year.

“I’ve learned so much from being in Art Society. I’ve done set painting and different projects with that,” Bluett said,  “and so I think I’ve learned more about what to do and what not to do, not just in the drawing sense, but more so with the process to get to a finished project.”

As President, Bluett helps to run the National Art Honor Society. She runs meetings, sends Remind messages, and generally just lets everyone know what’s going on. She also represents the chapter as needed, such as at the Officer’s Breakfast held every year.

Throughout the year, NAHS does several projects, including set painting and murals.

“My favorite that we do is the Porphan project,” Bluett said. “They’re portraits of orphans from other countries [that we create]. They send the pictures here and then we send the pictures back, and we’ve gotten videos of them getting them back. It’s really one of the greatest things.”

As she continues through high school and beyond, Bluett has plans to continue using art in her everyday life.

“I want to be a teacher, not necessarily an art teacher, but I believe that learning with creativity is the best way to learn,” she said. “Creativity in the classroom would be my goal.”

Art is something that she feels can be a positive aspect of anyone’s life.

“I have always thought that creativity is an innovative way of thinking, but it’s also a form of expression and that’s the great thing about it.”
