Social Media and Marketing Editor Most remember Steven Spielberg as the director of the critically-acclaimed E.T., or George Lucas for his work on Star Wars. Perhaps even Sophia Coppola for her work on The Outsiders. This year, students are now recognizing their new director for the school's spring musical, Dr. Cari Ayala.

Senior Editor Halloween is often perceived as a commercial holiday. It gets a reputation as being just another Hallmark money making scheme. However, the holiday actually has an incredibly rich history that not everyone knows about. According to The History Channel website, the origins of our modern Halloween traditions take root in numerous different cultures who have been celebrating on October 31 for centuries. Junior Editor-in-Chief It has been nearly 27 years since we’ve last heard from “IT,” which is Stephen King’s 1986 novel. In November of 1990, a miniseries based off of the book aired on ABC over a span of two nights. Now, IT reappeared in theatres on Sept. 28 2017, which is coincidentally 27 years from its 1990 miniseries. Rotten Tomatoes, a review website by Fandago, gave the 1990 series a 57%. On the other hand, the 2017 version of IT was given a 85% by the website. The 2017 version of IT appropriately portrayed the 1980s setting with its use of characters and setting. Director Andy Muschietti creates a visual of what the eighties looked like for today’s, more modern audience. By Shayla Scallorn Social Media Editor For the third year, Mrs. Granger’s freshman English class is writing and sending letters to the Juliet Club in Verona, Italy. Thousands of letters from around the globe are mailed in every year, addressed to the fictitious Juliet Capulet from Shakespeare’s renowned play “Romeo and Juliet.” The volunteers who run the club, known as “Juliet’s Secretaries,” take care to answer each one. The secretaries can read and write in several languages so anyone is able to write in. “They get handwritten letters back on official Letterhead,” English teacher Ashley Granger said. “Most kids start getting them within a couple of months, the rest will get them back next school year.” By Molly Merson
News & Features Editor The 2007 novel “Thirteen Reasons Why” by Jay Asher has recently been popularized by becoming a new Netflix series co-produced by Selena Gomez. It has grabbed social media’s attention along with many adolescents that are fans of the story. The show features teenager Hannah Baker’s story and struggles throughout high school. It revolves around Hannah’s experience with bullying and her eventual suicide. The story includes the thirteen reasons why Hannah completed suicide, hence the title “Thirteen Reasons Why”. The story sounds a bit dark upon first glance, but many teenagers have been moved by Hannah’s experience. Whether that is a positive or negative emotional impact is up for debate. According to an article published by the New York Times, superintendents and school counselors have been concerned that the show glorifies the idea of suicide and could cause an increase in such behavior among vulnerable students. This is my take on the thirteen reasons why the tv series could be harmful and/or controversial. The Leonid went behind the scenes of "The Music Man" to spotlight the students who put in work off stage. Set painters, pit musicians, hair and makeup artists, stage crew, and student directors all contribute to the musical behind the scenes.
