Nicole Belcher Staff Writer Expression. Coming up with just the right words to say something can be hard. Mr. Dave Hopkins wants to help students express themselves not with words, but instead with the tools of visual art. Hopkins is an art teacher at Red Lion Area Senior High School and every day he works hard to teach kids to become a better artist. “A lot of people have ideas in their head but they are too inexperienced to bring the idea out and then they get frustrated,” Hopkins said. Students are use to writing how they feel on paper but they are inexperienced with drawing how they feel, so they lack the ability to become more creative.
“If you’re willing to strive and learn to get better then you are, but if you’re not willing to, there’s nothing I can do,” Hopkins said. One of his students, Hannah Donagher talked about how Hopkins wouldn’t help his students a lot with their projects because he wanted them to work hard on their projects and get better at art. “He taught me that you need to dig deeper when it comes to your art,” Donagher said. “The true test to see if you like your art is to see it from a distance,” Donagher said. Upcoming artists learn to look at their work from farther distance as a way to critique their work, which is an important strategy hopkins has taught his students. Taking the easy way out is not helpful in becoming a better artist, students stay in their “comfort zone” and they don’t have the motivation to push themselves harder. Hopkins teaches his students to step outside of the box and learn how to widen their range of creative ideas.
